Tour­ney opens with bang

THE OPEN­ING GAME of the Bar­ba­dos Work­ers’ Union’s 38th An­nual Net­ball Tour­na­ment was a thriller that was de­cided by one goal at the Net­ball Sta­dium on Sun­day evening.

Com­pet­ing in the Ul­ric Sealy Zone, War­riors edged out BDF Solja Girlz 18-17.

War­riors led by one goal through­out the first and sec­ond quar­ters be­fore the Solja Girlz locked scores by the end of the third quar­ter. In the dy­ing stages of the fi­nal quar­ter, War­riors nipped ahead and held on.

Goal at­tack Keianna James led the War­riors to vic­tory, net­ting nine of her 16 at­tempts. She was as­sisted by Tiana Cat­lyn, who later took her bib to score seven of ten at­tempts, and goal shooter Mariah Haynes, who shot two of six.

Goal shooter Jenny Benedict ran op­er­a­tions for Solja Girlz, shoot­ing ten of 14 at­tempts, while goal at­tack Tif­fany Lovell con­trib­uted seven of 13.

In the Linda Brooks Zone, Ba­can­nal Time Mo­men­tum de­feated New­bury 26-15.

Af­ter an even first quar­ter, which ended with the scores locked at 5-5, BT Mo­men­tum who scored five goals in the sec­ond quar­ter to their two and six goals to their three in the third quar­ter.

Ba­can­nal Time Mo­men­tum con­tin­ued to out­play New­bury, fin­ish­ing with ten goals in the fi­nal quar­ter.

Sherry-ann Top­pin shot a game-high 17 from 20 at­tempts while Kristina Clarke as­sisted with five of ten and Rosheena Red­man four of five. New­bury goal shooter Bev­erly Marsh shot nine of 11 at­tempts and goal at­tack Shakiela Smith six of ten.

When the ac­tion re­sumed on Mon­day, Rapid Re­sponse were com­fort­able 26-15 win­ners over Cen­tral Bank in the Ul­ric Sealy Zone.

For Rapid Re­sponse, start­ing goal shooter and goal at­tack Rianna Ed­wards and Shanyia Moore scored nine of 22 and eight of 12, re­spec­tively.

Start­ing goal de­fence Janelle Steven­son later switched to goal at­tack, scor­ing seven of eight at­tempts, be­fore Shakira Thomp­son took her place to score two of seven.

Cen­tral Bank’s Natalia Morgan net­ted eight of 11 while Danika Ather­ley and Kay Reid scored four of six and three of four, re­spec­tively.

In an­other Ul­ric Sealy Zone match, NIS Ballers beat Steve’s Build­ing Works 20-17.

Shekela Babb shot eight of 11 and Aaliyah Al­leyne eight of 16 for the win­ners, while De­niece Dray­ton scored 16 of 28 at­tempts and Lisa Lash­ley four of six for NIS. (RG)
