Tourney opens with bang
THE OPENING GAME of the Barbados Workers’ Union’s 38th Annual Netball Tournament was a thriller that was decided by one goal at the Netball Stadium on Sunday evening.
Competing in the Ulric Sealy Zone, Warriors edged out BDF Solja Girlz 18-17.
Warriors led by one goal throughout the first and second quarters before the Solja Girlz locked scores by the end of the third quarter. In the dying stages of the final quarter, Warriors nipped ahead and held on.
Goal attack Keianna James led the Warriors to victory, netting nine of her 16 attempts. She was assisted by Tiana Catlyn, who later took her bib to score seven of ten attempts, and goal shooter Mariah Haynes, who shot two of six.
Goal shooter Jenny Benedict ran operations for Solja Girlz, shooting ten of 14 attempts, while goal attack Tiffany Lovell contributed seven of 13.
In the Linda Brooks Zone, Bacannal Time Momentum defeated Newbury 26-15.
After an even first quarter, which ended with the scores locked at 5-5, BT Momentum who scored five goals in the second quarter to their two and six goals to their three in the third quarter.
Bacannal Time Momentum continued to outplay Newbury, finishing with ten goals in the final quarter.
Sherry-ann Toppin shot a game-high 17 from 20 attempts while Kristina Clarke assisted with five of ten and Rosheena Redman four of five. Newbury goal shooter Beverly Marsh shot nine of 11 attempts and goal attack Shakiela Smith six of ten.
When the action resumed on Monday, Rapid Response were comfortable 26-15 winners over Central Bank in the Ulric Sealy Zone.
For Rapid Response, starting goal shooter and goal attack Rianna Edwards and Shanyia Moore scored nine of 22 and eight of 12, respectively.
Starting goal defence Janelle Stevenson later switched to goal attack, scoring seven of eight attempts, before Shakira Thompson took her place to score two of seven.
Central Bank’s Natalia Morgan netted eight of 11 while Danika Atherley and Kay Reid scored four of six and three of four, respectively.
In another Ulric Sealy Zone match, NIS Ballers beat Steve’s Building Works 20-17.
Shekela Babb shot eight of 11 and Aaliyah Alleyne eight of 16 for the winners, while Deniece Drayton scored 16 of 28 attempts and Lisa Lashley four of six for NIS. (RG)
