To be or not to bra . . .

Daily Nation (Barbados) - - Comment -

THE LETTERS “RH” on the anti-litter billboard do not constitute an acronym – as one of your reporters wrote in the SATURDAY SUN online edition of October 7.

BARP, AIDS, NATO, NIFCA and CTUSAB are acronyms; CSME, BRSA, LGBT, NUPW and BSTU are abbreviations. DLP and BLP are not acronyms; BRA and VAT are.

Sometimes acronyms can evoke mirth; even derision. I always thought it risky for Government to rename its tax collecting department the Barbados Revenue Authority.

If the ladies are uncomfortable with that acronym, they should ask Government to rename it. I had thought by now that certain calypsonians would’ve tried it on.

All acronyms are abbreviations; not all abbreviations are acronyms. – CARL MOORE
