Deacons outplay Warrens
DEACONS WOMEN handed defending champions Pan American International Insurance Warrens their first league loss in two years on Monday.
They won 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9 when the Goddard Enterprises Division 1 volleyball league continued at the Wildey Gymnasium.
De-ann Smith and Julia Lewis were outstanding for Deacons, with only Rhe-ann Niles standing between Deacons and a total annihilation of Warrens.
On Sunday, Deacons had looked ordinary in being trampled in straight sets by the smoking hot Burger King Clapham Toners.
But Monday night proved to be a revival session for Deacons as their men came from two sets down and 20-22 in the third set to defeat Progressive 20-25, 24-26, 25-23, 33-31, 15-11. Kyle Browne carried the game for Deacons.
However, the poor effort by Progressive after being up two sets was almost unbelievable. Key players Fabian Cox took on his former Barbados teammate Browne with across the net trash talk to lose the personal and then team battle.
At 22-20 Cox was crushingly blocked one on one by Browne. The next ball Cox made a mess with the reception to hand up the first of two aces to Deacons who advanced to 23-22 and then took the set.
The fourth set went into over-time with Deacons edging to the decider which they clinched with Browne dominating along with Akeel Oxley.
The other men’s match saw All Stars defaulting to men’s champions Chargers. In the earlier women’s action, Toners put Frozen Minis Club United back into the freezer 25-23, 25-12, 22-25, 25-23. Club United had won their first league game on Sunday to be jolted back to reality on Monday. (KB)
