ESSO GAS STATION in Black Rock, St Michael, is up and running after its closure caused anxiety among some workers who feared they would lose their jobs earlier this month.

At that time, Ezra Prescod, general manager of SOL, the licensed distributor of Esso in Barbados, said it had been closed for essential maintenance.

He explained that while the employees were not SOL workers, the oil company still made an effort to meet with them and guarantee their severance pay.

He also noted at the time, the new franchise holder had committed to interviewing existing workers to see who he could rehire.

A visit to the Esso station earlier this week revealed that the vast majority of staff were not those from the previous ownership. Some were reported to have received their severance and others absorbed at other Esso stations around the island.

The workers’ bone of contention was that they were given just a week’s notice the business would be closing.

Efforts to reach Prescod, or the station’s new operators, were unsuccessful. (AD)
