Night of thrills at GAIA semis

Daily Nation (Barbados) - - Sport 4 -

It was a thrilling night of intrigue, with more twists than an Alfred Hitchcock plot in GAIA INC, 9-A-side Football Tournament playoffs at the Maurice King Sports Complex in Briar Hall, Christ Church.

Fifteen goals, including four in a penalty shootout, deiighted the appreciative crowd watching the playoffs Wednesday night.

Zone A winners GAIA Inc opened proceedings with a 2-1 win over Runway Duty Free as the inform Brian Corbin and Rico Forde netted for GAIA while Kareem Farrell got the consolation for Runway.

Goddard’s Catering, against the run of play, ended the highflying Drive-a-matic Sun Group’s progress, through the lone strike from Terrike Small.

Zone B winners Mockatellas had to dig deep after Passenger Service Agents United drew level at the stroke of halftime after Anthony Forde’s opening goal was equalised by Jamar Yearwood.

The floodgates opened in the second stanza with Mockatellas hammering five goals for a 6-1 victory to romp into the semis. Gregg Mandeville and Tyrell Hinkson recorded braces, while Chad Small also scored. An undermanned Aliants drew first blood through Omari Jackman against Caribbean Aircraft Handling Ramp, only to let their hold on a semifinal berth slip as Ramp forced the shootout with a late equaliser from Tramaine Durant.

The momentum shift remained with the Ramp as they won the dreaded penalty shootout 3-1.

The GAIA and Goddard’s open Monday’s semifinals, followed by the Mockatellas and Ramp battle. The tournament concludes with the finals and presentation ceremony on Friday October 19.
