Mixed domino fortunes for Bajans
Barbados had mixed fortunes at the World Council of Dominoes Federation’s Championship in Guyana.
On Tuesday, Barbados held of a stiff challenge from Antigua to win their Four-hand match 70-66 after trailing by 15 points at one stage.
Sherry-ann Dawson and Suzette Hinds got 14 points while Charles Proverbs and Decourtney Estwick also got 14 points.
Mark Bynoe and Stanley Jones, who got an early baptism with a six-love the previous game, came in at a crucial stage and made a valuable contribution with nine points.
In Three-hand women’s action, Barbados (72) lost by one point to the United States (74) and Guyana (73) but Keisha Brathwaite chalked up 16 points.
The Barbadian ladies also tied with Anguilla on 79 points each while USA got 62. Sophia Thorpe got 18 points and the inform Brathwaite added 15.
Barbados’ men also suffered two Three-hand losses.
In the first match, Guyana (75) prevailed over Barbados (65) and USA (60). Anguilla (80) won the second game from USA (67) and Barbados (65).
Antigua (76) also defeated St Lucia (72) and Guyana (69).
On opening night last Saturday, Barbados hammered Guyana in Four-hand 94-44. Charmaine Durant and Susan Jean-baptiste slammed 18 points as well as Ralph Bailey and Michael Griffith.
Barbados’ men’s and women’s teams were also victorious in their Three-hand matches.
The women triumphed over Guyana and Anguilla, 83-73-70 respectively with Durant and Sharon Lynch both getting 17 points.
The men also won from Guyana and Anguilla 83-68-66 respectively. Bailey gained maximum 18 points and Basil Clarke contributed 17.
