Belaruskaya Dumka - - SUMMARY -

The art of Belarusian national poet Yakub Kolas has clearly biographical references. The heart-warming images of the native land, sadness and joy are manifest in many of his early literary works, including the poem “Plytniki” (Log Drivers). The article discusses the historical subtext of this poem, gives a detailed account of such trade as log driving, in which Kolas’s fellowmen, the inhabitants of the villages located on the Neman River near the modern-day Stolbtsy, were engaged in.

Lyudmila Semenova, Doctor of Historical Sciences, takes a look at capital as primarily a monetary asset and at capitalism as a system intent on expanding. The author analyzes Belarus as a country that has not been consumed by the global capitalism system.
