Move for health walk
T he government has decided to observe 11th October as Move for Health Walk starting the first observation last year. The walk kicked off from Bajo town in Wangdiphodrang and ended up in clock tower square in Thimphu. Given the importance of the walk the Prime Minister along with his cabinet ministers took part in this event.
The move for health walk was first initiated by then health minister Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup in 2002 who trudged from Trashigang to Thimphu covering a distance of 560 kilometers in 15 1/4days. The walk was not successful in raising awareness on health but also raising USD 2 M for Bhutan Health Trust Fund.
Bhutan Trust Fund has supported the procurement of vaccines including the nationwide introduction of Measles, Rubella vaccines since its operationalization in 2003. It is also co-financing the procurement of penatavalent vaccines with Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization ( GAVI) since 2009 and will have to take up the full finalizing by 2015 as per the GAVI requirements.
Bhutan Trust Fund was envisioned by our Fourth Druk Gyalpo His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuk and would be very befitting to start financing the entire Essential Drugs during the commemoration of his 60th Birthday.
This year the move for health walk will be ob- served on 11th of October 2014 from Kasadrapchu to Thimphu to raise awareness on health related issues and raise fund for BHTF. The GAVI will be withdrawing its support from 2016 and BHTF will have to finance the purchase of pentavalent vaccines for our girls. Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay and the health minister will be taking part in the walk and more than 2,000 people are expected join the walk. During the walk people are expected to make voluntary contributions for the fund where necessary receipts will be issued. Further the government also contributes all the heath contributions collected from the monthly salaries to sustain the fund.
The Bhutan Health Trust Fund was established on 3rd of August 2000 with a noble vision of sustainability of primary healthcare services through the provision of continued and uninterrupted supply if core primary health care supplies of vaccines, essential drugs, needles, syringes cold chain management and other related drugs and equipments.
With the heath care system becoming more expensive day by day due to increase in the life style diseases, it is high time that everyone should come forward and make a humble contribution for BHTF. So that we can realize how much it will cost the government the medicines we get from our health centers free of cost.
