Bhutan at­tends PP-14 con­fer­ence

The 2014 In­ter­na­tional Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion, Union Plenipo­ten­tiary Con­fer­ence ( PP- 14 or PP- 14 Bu­san) s un­der­way in Bu­san, the sec­ond big­gest city in Korea.

The In­for­ma­tion and Com­mu­ni­ca­tion Min­is­ter Ly­onpo D. N. Dhungyel along with the of­fi­cials from the Min­istry of In­for­ma­tion and Com­mu­ni­ca­tions at­tended the con­fer­ence. In his ad­dress on the 21st of Oc­to­ber 2014, Ly­onpo high­lighted the ICT pol­icy of Bhutan and pro­mul­gated for an ICT en­abled , knowl­edge – based so­ci­ety based as a Foun­da­tion for Gross Na­tional Hap­pi­ness .

Ly­onpo said Bhutan as a mem­ber of the In­ter­na­tional Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion Union fully en­dorses the vi­sions, goals and tar­gets of Con­nect 2020 as the gov­ern­ment strongly be­lieve that In­for­ma­tion so­ci­ety is about em­pow­er­ment of peo­ple so that the peo­ple can achieve their full po­ten­tial. The vi­sion will ad­di­tion­ally feed into build­ing a sound foun­da­tion for Gross Na­tional Hap­pi­ness which re­quires the Gov­ern­ment to cre­ate the right con­di­tions for peo­ple to pur­sue a con­tented life.

Ly­onpo fur­ther said that Bhutan is con­fi­dent that by 2020, more than 90% of our ru­ral pop­u­la­tion and 50% of all house­hold will have ac­cess to af­ford­able broad­band con­nec­tions.

“Col­lab­o­ra­tion be­tween ITU and Bhutan has been ex­em­plary and I would like to take this op­por­tu­nity to rec­og­nize and place on record the in­valu­able as­sis­tance re­ceived from other de­vel­op­ment part­ners as well in our on- go­ing ef­fort to de­velop this vi­tal sec­tor” Ly­onpo said.

As a UN spe­cial­ized agency on ICTs( in­for­ma­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tions tech­nol­ogy), the In­ter­na­tional Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tion Union ( ITU) leads the de­vel­op­ment and global dif­fu­sion of ICT and net­works by man­ag­ing in­ter­na­tional ra­diofre­quency spec­trum and satel­lite or­bits and by de­vel­op­ing tech­no­log­i­cal stan­dards in telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions., Global ICT Con­fer­ence, and Korean Cul­tural Fes­ti­val.. The con­fer­ence will end on 7th of Novem­ber 2014.
