Bhutan attends PP-14 conference
The 2014 International Telecommunication, Union Plenipotentiary Conference ( PP- 14 or PP- 14 Busan) s underway in Busan, the second biggest city in Korea.
The Information and Communication Minister Lyonpo D. N. Dhungyel along with the officials from the Ministry of Information and Communications attended the conference. In his address on the 21st of October 2014, Lyonpo highlighted the ICT policy of Bhutan and promulgated for an ICT enabled , knowledge – based society based as a Foundation for Gross National Happiness .
Lyonpo said Bhutan as a member of the International Telecommunication Union fully endorses the visions, goals and targets of Connect 2020 as the government strongly believe that Information society is about empowerment of people so that the people can achieve their full potential. The vision will additionally feed into building a sound foundation for Gross National Happiness which requires the Government to create the right conditions for people to pursue a contented life.
Lyonpo further said that Bhutan is confident that by 2020, more than 90% of our rural population and 50% of all household will have access to affordable broadband connections.
“Collaboration between ITU and Bhutan has been exemplary and I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and place on record the invaluable assistance received from other development partners as well in our on- going effort to develop this vital sector” Lyonpo said.
As a UN specialized agency on ICTs( information and communications technology), the International Telecommunication Union ( ITU) leads the development and global diffusion of ICT and networks by managing international radiofrequency spectrum and satellite orbits and by developing technological standards in telecommunications., Global ICT Conference, and Korean Cultural Festival.. The conference will end on 7th of November 2014.
