His Majesty The King graced the launch of the National Reading Year 2015, initiated by the Ministry of Education. The National Reading Year is dedicated to His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, as part of His Majesty’s 60th Birth Anniversary celebrations.

His Majesty The King granted an audience and Tokha to more than ten thousand students and teachers from Thimphu and Paro, who attended the event. The students and teachers were invited by the government as a gesture of special thanks for their role in making the state visits of the Indian Prime Minister and President a huge success this year.

Addressing the students, His Majesty said that if they strive to serve the country in the future, look after their parents, and become strong and successful adults, students must gain sound education.

“You must read about everything around not just subjects that interest you. You must learn about current events, history, science, culture and people around the world- the pursuit of knowledge must be life long,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty also granted a special edition of the book, “Prince Siddhartha- The Story of Buddha” as Soelra to the students.

The event included performances and a special drill by the Royal Bhutan Police.

With the National Reading Year, the Ministry of Education aims to encourage students to cultivate a reading habit. It seeks the support of families, teachers, and the media to build a vibrant reading culture in Bhutan, and has planned several activities throughout the year, geared towards this end.
