Power tillers for each Gewog
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests distributed a power tiller each for every Gewogs of six eastern dzongkhags this month. The initiative started from Lhuentse and Mongar dzongkhags last week.
The Minister of Agriculture and Forests handed over eight power tillers to the gewog agriculture extension agents in the presence of the Gups of their respective gewogs in Lhuentse . The minister said that it’s his hope that the power tillers will prove useful to all the farmers while also urging them to take good care of it. He further informed that while every gewog will have at least one power tiller each, more will be supplied as per the needs of each gewogs.
The program director from the Agriculture Machinery Center (AMC) at Paro briefed the extension agents and local leaders on the guidelines regarding the leasing of the power tillers. He also informed that the training of operators and technical backstopping will be provided by the center or the regional centers.
Similarly, seventeen power tillers have been handed over to the extension agents of Mongar dzongkhag the same day. The speaker of the national assembly urged people to make use of the power tiller harmoniously. He also thanked the government on behalf of the people of Mongar dzongkhag.
The Gewog extension officers will manage the power tillers and will be sent on hire to the farmers followed by guidelines of the hiring system.
The rate today has been fixed at Nu 1,400 a day including charges to the operator, fuel and maintenance.
The power tillers were sourced through support from the Japanese Government under KR II grant. Eight Gewogs of Lhuentse and Trashi Yangtse and 17 Gewogs of Monggar have already received the power tillers. Later it will be distributed to Pema Gatshel and Samdrup Jongkhar.
The government has again requested the Japan International Cooperation Agency ( JICA) for 400 more power tillers to be delivered on the first batch against the request for 1,450 power tillers. The Japanese government has in principle agreed for the help and the matter is being discussed and to be considered,
With more than 70% of our population that earns their livelihood in agriculture and these power tillers will make their live much easier. However it always needs better management and streamling in the hiring procedures for the effective use of the machine.
This becomes the part of the PDP manifesto for a power tiller in each chiwog and more as per their manifesto many be on the way. Two helicopters, bank in each gewog and a service enter as promised.
