His Majesty graces the cel­e­bra­tion of first Na­tional Scouts Day

2 1st Fe­bru­ary 2015: His Majesty The King graced the cel­e­bra­tion of the first Na­tional Scouts Day, which will be ob­served from this year on­wards on 21st Fe­bru­ary, co­in­cid­ing with His Majesty’s Birth An­niver­sary.

Scouts from var­i­ous schools in Thim­phu, as well from across the coun­try, along with a con­tin­gent of De Su­ups, par­tic­i­pated in the event.

Ad­dress­ing the scouts, His Majesty said that ever since scout­ing be­gan in Bhutan in 1996, His Majesty ad­dressed ev­ery an­nual event, and as a re­sult, shares a deep bond with scouts in Bhutan.

His Majesty re­minded the scouts that they are the cus­to­di­ans of our Na­tional her­itage and cul­ture, as well as the cus­to­di­ans of peace and har­mony, and must al­ways strive for ex­cel­lence.

“Your hard work, and ev­ery ex­tra ef­fort that you put in, is an in­vest­ment that you make to- day for your fu­ture, and a present from you to your King and Coun­try,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty said that we must be deeply con­scious of the im­mense strug­gle that a na­tion like ours faces to suc­ceed in the 21st cen­tury, as carry out our work.

The scouts of­fered a cake to His Majesty The King, and pre­sented a cul­tural per­for­mance be­fore Their Majesties. They also set up var­i­ous stalls with food and games to cel­e­brate the day.

In the af­ter­noon, His Majesty The King signed Royal Char­ters to es­tab­lish a Law School in Bhutan, and for De Su­ung, at the Throne Room of the Tashich­hod­zong.

The Law School, which will be built in Paro, is en­vi­sioned the pri­mary lo­cus of legal ed­u­ca­tion and the pri­mary path­way to ad­mis­sion to prac­tice law in Bhutan. It will also serve as a cen­ter for the pro­mo­tion and pro­mul­ga­tion of re­search con­cern­ing Bhutanese laws and legal sys­tem. The in­sti­tute aims to re­cruit its first batch of LLB stu­dents by 2017, and up­grade to pro­vide LLM cour­ses in the next 3-4years, with a fo­cus on en­vi­ron­ment and sus­tain­abil­ity.

De­Su­ung was ini­ti­ated upon Royal Com­mand in 2011, and has trained 14 batches of vol­un­teers so far. The vol­un­teers have as­sisted the armed forces and po­lice dur­ing na­tional events, and in times of dis­as­ters.

His Majesty The King also granted Cit­i­zen­ship Kidu to 196 in­di­vid­u­als at the Kuen­rey of the Tashich­hod­zong.

His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyalt­suen with the scouts, De­su­ups and scout­mas­ters at the Na­tional Scout Day cel­e­bra­tions.
