More power tillers to help farm mechanization and ser­vices

The Royal Gov­ern­ment has re­quested Ja­pan In­ter­na­tional Co­op­er­a­tion Agency ( JICA ) to sup­port a project called, ‘Chi­wog grant as­sis­tance for farm mechanization and Ser­vices’, 1450 nos. of power tillers has been re­quested un­der the project. To dis­cuss fur­ther, a pre­lim­i­nary sur­vey team from JICA led by Dr. Ku­ni­hiro Tokida is in the coun­try from March 9-14.

The team met with Sec­re­tary of the Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture, Ten­zin Dhendup and se­nior of­fi­cials from the Agri­cul­ture Depart­ment to dis­cuss the project im­ple­men­ta­tion. The meet­ing dis­cussed the spe­cific and fea­si­ble struc­ture for ef­fec­tive use of power tillers, scale and de­liv­ery sched­ule, own­er­ship of grant among oth­ers.

The Bhutanese team has pro­posed a plan to uti­lize the power tillers in hir­ing ser­vices af­ter ver­i­fy­ing the ser­vice fea­si­bil­ity struc­ture through the ones de­liv­ered un­der KRII and sub­mit an in­terim re­port by end of July 2015. The meet­ing agreed that the on­go­ing ‘Strength­en­ing Farm Mechanization Project (Phase II)’ will pro­vide ad­vice dur­ing verification of the said hir­ing struc­ture. They also agreed to re­move ‘Chi­wog’ from the ti­tle to gen­er­al­ize the project.

Af­ter a se­ries of project meet­ings, the ‘Min­utes of Meet­ing’ was signed be­tween the Sec­re­tary and Dr. Ku­ni­hiro Tokida high­light­ing the ini­tial agree­ments be­tween two par­ties.

Ac­cord­ing to Mr. Karma Thinley, the Pro­gram Direc­tor for Agri­cul­ture Ma­chin­ery Cen­tre, there will be an­other round of project dis­cus­sion meet­ing in 2016. He added that the power tillers can be ex­pected to be de­liv­ered in 2017 at the ear­li­est.
