Bhutan at the World con­fer­ence for Dis­as­ter Risk Re­duc­tion

Lead­ing the Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion to the Third United Na­tions World Con­fer­ence for Dis­as­ter Risk Re­duc­tion held from 14-18 March, at Sendai , Ja­pan , Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji, Min­is­ter of Home and Cul­tural Af­fairs dur­ing the ple­nary ses­sion held on 16th March 2015 high­lighted the vul­ner­a­bil­i­ties, pri­or­i­ties, achieve­ments, and the chal­lenges faced by Bhutan in the field of dis­as­ter risk re­duc­tion. Ly­onpo re­it­er­ated that dis­as­ters, ex­ac­er­bated by cli­mate change, sig­nif­i­cantly im­pede progress of the de­vel­op­ing coun­tries, to­wards sus­tain­able de­velop- ment and poverty re­duc­tion. He also en­cour­aged greater com­mit­ment from the in­ter­na­tional com­mu­nity to­wards the im­ple­men­ta­tion of the post-2015 frame­work for dis­as­ter risk re­duc­tion by strength­en­ing the means of im­ple­men­ta­tion with sus­tain­able, ad­e­quate and pre­dictable pro­vi­sion of fi­nance, tech­nol­ogy trans­fer and ca­pac­ity build­ing. Ly­onpo also suc­cess­fully par­tic­i­pated in the dis­cus­sions of the Min­is­te­rial Round­table Meet­ing on “in­ter­na­tional co­op­er­a­tion on Post-2015 frame­work for DRR” which was held on March 15 201-5. ln or­der to study and learn from the re­cov­ery process from the 2011 Great East Ja­pan earth­quake and tsunami, the Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion joined the field visit to the Yuriage fish­ing port. The con­fer­ence was suc­cess­ful with the adop­tion of the Post-2015 Frame­work for Dis­as­ter Risk Re­duc­tion and the Sendai Dec­la­ra­tion. There were over 4,000 par­tic­i­pants at the con­fer­ence, in­clud­ing rep­re­sen­ta­tives of 185 gov­ern­ments, academia, NGOs, and rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the in­ter­na­tional or­ga­ni­za­tions and civil so­ci­eties.
