The twelfth anniversary of the World Blood Donor Day was observed at Bank of Bhutan, City Hall in the capital. The event was organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Bank of Bhutan. The day aims to raise awareness on the importance of blood donation and recognize the contribution of blood donors in saving lives and improving health. This year the Day has a further purpose: to create wider awareness throughout the world about the need for availability and appropriate use of safe blood and for many more people to make a commitment to donate blood regularly.

“Thank you for saving my life” is the theme of this year’s campaign which aims to highlight stories of patients whose lives have been saved through blood donation.

Bhutan joins the global community each year on this special day, with the Ministry of Health in collaboration with World Health Organization and Bank of Bhutan, spearheading the advocacy and awareness activities with the goal to promote and obtain all our blood supplies from 100% voluntary unpaid donors by 2020 as set by WHO.

Her Royal Highness Princess Ashi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck graced the occasion and donated blood. Health minister Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk , officials from the Ministry of Health and Bank of Bhutan also donated blood on the occasion.
