Kholongchhu project will start soon
As an updates to the upcoming Kholongchhu project, the Member from Boomdeling-Jamkhar constituency, Member of Parliament (MP) Duptho questioned the Economic Affairs Minister during question and hour session in the national assembly last Friday. As it was already a year that the foundation stone for the project was laid down. He asked when the actual works for construction of Kholongchhu hydropower project would commence.
In responding to the questions, the Minister for Economic Affairs, Lyonpo Norbu Wangchuk said that they have discussed the issues recently, and the Ministry had carry out necessary works in the last one year which was important for starting the actual project such as preparing tender documents and building roads and bridges among others.
Lyonpo said that the representative of the Tashiyangtse have the concern for the people and used to inquire about the project not only in the Parliament but also use to ask even outside the Parliament. For this Lyonpo said that it is good for the concerns since it will be benefited for the people.
This project is the first of four joint venture projects which consist of Wangchhu, Bunakha, Chamkharchhu and the Kholongchhu, Lyonpo added.
Lyonpo further informed to the house that the production capacity of the Kholongchhu hydroelectric project is 600MW which will be 10 times more than the production capacity of Kurichhu project. This project is the 2nd project for the six eastern Bhutan next to Kurichhu project but Kurichhu which was started in the year 2002 and has the production capacity of only 60 MW.
During the time of starting of the Kurichhu project and after the commissioning of the project, as it was said by the local people that because of the Kurichhu project, there was increased in the economy development in and around the project, said that Lyonpo.
Lyonpo added that because of the Kholongchhu project and as it will be 10 times more than the Kurichhu project, there will be 10 times more benefit for the people because there will be development in the road connectivity, business opportunity, economy development and employment opportunity.
He said that, as it was said earlier that since the project would be the first of four joint venture project, it should be as a exemplary project, for that reason while discussing we have to be very careful because from this project, there should be benefit for the people in terms of the supplying of the raw material and it should be from the local people. Lyonpo said that it’s not that we are not working on it.
He added that to pre- pared the work, we need many infrastructure to be in place, we require about 40 km of roads needs to be constructed to connect to the project site, needs to construct 2 bridges and many other infrastructure. For this the paper work of tendering is already done and from the Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), it’s ready. But to work, we need to form committee then after the formation of the board, they will evaluate for the work and then only they will distribute the work.
With regards to the development of the Khetshang town of Tashiyangtse Dzongkhag, Lyonpo said that they have worked and discussed for about one year and it has been done almost.
