ICT champions recognized
To mark the telecommunication and Information society Day, the Department of IT and Telecom under the Ministry of Communications and Information awarded prizes and certificates to the ICT champions last Friday.
So-called ICT Champions is recognized for their valuable contribution to society through innovation in ICT and Telecommunication. Out of four entries the prizes were given to 2 innovators.
Addressing the prize award ceremony, the Minister of Information and Communication, D.N Dhungyel said ‘We have ability, capacity and capability if we intend to do it, ICT is ever evolving’.
The winners Bhutan Telemedicine Group, initiated by Dr. Purushotam Bhandari. Child Specialist at Central Referral hospital, which basically started in 2010 with 10 members, has now 230 members and its member include only doctors and health workers.
Dr. P Bhandari said, this forum is mainly designed to discuss issues and make it accessible to specialized health care services, especially for the people of rural, semiurban and remote area by using ICT as a means of medium to transfer and share information.
The other winners include automatic repository information s system for Community Health(ARISCH) designed and developed by Mr. Phurba Wangdi and Mr. Sujit Kumar Rai of South Tech Bhutan Pvt. Ltd.
The automatic repository information system for community health is a local web server based system and currently the community health department under Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Referral Hospital in Thimphu uses these services.
The prize winner Phurba Wangdi said ‘This system is meant to store data of the clients who is expected to be a mother and it stores their detail record before and after delivery of the baby and continues to keep the data of the child till he attains the age of 6’. And so far during the last six months 1000 data has been stored.
As of now out of 11 services, community Health Department has incorporated 6 in the System and it proved to be of an immense help for health staffs, currently they are working on a 2nd version of the System, so that it will fix the problems of earlier version.
The Department of IT and Telecom evaluation team disqualified 2 nominees, GSM based home automation system and Budgeting Plus for not fulfilling the required criteria and welcomes more innovators in coming years, for the department will celebrate ICT champions annually.
