Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji takes over as the For­eign Min­is­ter from to­day

The newly ap­pointed For­eign Min­istry, Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji will be join­ing the Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs from to­day.

The Min­is­ter will be re­ceived at the Gya­ly­ong Tshokhang by the of­fi­cers and staff of Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs in the morn­ing. There will be Zhug­drel Phuen­sum Tshog­pai Ten­drel ( tra­di­tional welcome cer­e­mony) af­ter which the Min­is­ter will sign the join­ing or­der.

Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji was born in Khailo, Gasa. He stud­ied at Pu­nakha High School and did his un­der­grad­u­ate at Sherubtse Col­lege in Trashigang . He did his LLB at Gov­ern­ment Law Col­lege, Mum­bai, In­dia and LLM at Georgetown Law Cen­tre, Georgetown Univer­sity in the United States.

Be­tween 1991 and 2007, Ly­onpo served as the Deputy Reg­is­trar Gen­eral at the High Court, Drang­pon (Judge) In Gele­phu, Mon­gar, Wang­duepho­drang and Punukha Dis­trict courts. He also served as Di­rec­tor, Of­fice of Le­gal Af­fairs and At­tor­ney Gen­eral of Bhutan be­tween 2006 and 2007.

Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji par­tic­i­pated and was elected in the first par­lia­men­tary elec­tion in 2008 as a can­di­date of the peo­ple’s Demo­cratic Party (PDP) rep­re­sent­ing Kha­toe-Laya con­stituency. He was ap­pointed as Min­is­ter for Home and Cul­tural Af­fairs af­ter PDP won the sec­ond par­lia­men­tary elec­tion in 2013.

Ly­onpo Dam­cho Dorji is a re­cip­i­ent of Druk Thuk­sey ( Heart Son) Award. He is mar­ried with four chil­dren. His fa­vorite hobby is archery and gar­den­ing.
