Move for Health
Another chapter of Mover for Health walk will be held today were participants will walk from RTC to Clock Tower in Thimphu. It is the part of a weeklong event organized by the government where donors are invited to take part.
The walk is dedicated to the 60th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo who championed the healthcare services by providing free to the people. In order to ensure continued and timely supply of vaccines and essential drugs, the Bhutan Heath Trust Fund (BHTF) was launched in 2000. It was accorded the Royal Charter.
The fund was augmented by then then Health Minister, Lyonpo Sangay Ngedrup, in 2002. He initiated the cross country walk from Trashigang to Thimphu covering 560KM which took more than two weeks to complete. The walk created awareness on fund facility and roped in contributions from donors amounting to almost US$ 2 million. The fund raising helped close in the target of the BHTF.
The support for the walk campaign declined over the years.
After more than a decade later, the current Health Minister, Tandin Wangchuk, revived the campaign in 2013. Supporters walked from Wangdu-Thimphu pro- moting healthy lifestyle and raising funds to the BHTF. The walk was completed in one and a half days.
Thereafter, the campaign became an annual event. Last year the walk was held from Khasadrapchu to Thimphu with the theme: Move for health, Invest in health.
This year’s event is considered very significant since the government will be launching the ‘Financing of Essential Drugs and Medicines’ through BHTF. Potential donors were invited to witness the launch to see how their contributions have benefited the society.
The other 19 Dzongkhags are also organizing similar events.
