Bhutan-Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Level Meeting
The annual commerce secretary level meeting ( CSLM) between Bhutan and Bangladesh was held on last Tuesday in Dhaka.
The Bhutanese delegation was led by Dasho Yeshi Wangdi, secretary, ministry of economic affairs and included Bhutan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, senior officials from Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, and Bhutan Standards Bureau.
The Bangladeshi delegation was led by H. E. Mr. Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and included officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Home, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, National Board of Revenue, Bangladesh Standards Testing Institution, Power Division, Road Transport and Highway Division, Bangladesh Tariff Commission, and Export Promotion Bureau.
Both delegations noted that the holding of CSLM on a regular basis is a testimony to the importance both governments attach to the existing warm and friendly relations between Bhutan and Bangladesh. The CSLM has made significant contribution to further enhance bilateral trade and commerce.
Both sides agreed on the importance of further promoting bilateral trade. The meeting discussed trade concessions, and also covered a wide range of issues such as Transit, use of inland waterways, trade facilitation, financial transactions, immigration, customs cooperation, tourism, investment, and technical cooperation between the national standards institutions. The meeting agreed to fast track signing of the Protocol on the Agreement on Transit, Agreement on use of Inland waterways, MoU on Standards, and MoU on Sanitary and Phytosanitary. On the hydropower cooperation interest shown by the Bangladesh side, the Bhutanese delegation informed that it may be taken up at other appropriate forums.
The meeting was held in a most friendly manner and reaffirmed the strong ties of friendship and goodwill that exists between Bhutan and Bangladesh. It was agreed that the next meeting will be held in Thimphu at a mutually convenient time.
Dasho Yeshi Wangdi and delegation also called on H. E. Mr. Tofail Ahmed, Minister of Commerce of Bangladesh on 2 December 2015.
