Bhutan-Bangladesh Commerce Sec­re­tary Level Meet­ing

The an­nual commerce sec­re­tary level meet­ing ( CSLM) be­tween Bhutan and Bangladesh was held on last Tues­day in Dhaka.

The Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion was led by Dasho Yeshi Wangdi, sec­re­tary, min­istry of eco­nomic af­fairs and in­cluded Bhutan’s am­bas­sador to Bangladesh, se­nior of­fi­cials from Min­istry of Eco­nomic Af­fairs, Min­istry of Fi­nance, Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture and Forests, and Bhutan Stan­dards Bureau.

The Bangladeshi del­e­ga­tion was led by H. E. Mr. He­dayetul­lah Al Mamoon, Se­nior Sec­re­tary, Min­istry of Commerce and in­cluded of­fi­cials from Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs, Min­istry of Ship­ping, Min­istry of In­dus­tries, Min­istry of Home, Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture, Min­istry of Civil Avi­a­tion and Tourism, Na­tional Board of Rev­enue, Bangladesh Stan­dards Test­ing Institution, Power Di­vi­sion, Road Trans­port and High­way Di­vi­sion, Bangladesh Tar­iff Com­mis­sion, and Ex­port Pro­mo­tion Bureau.

Both del­e­ga­tions noted that the hold­ing of CSLM on a reg­u­lar ba­sis is a tes­ti­mony to the im­por­tance both gov­ern­ments at­tach to the ex­ist­ing warm and friendly re­la­tions be­tween Bhutan and Bangladesh. The CSLM has made sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tion to fur­ther en­hance bi­lat­eral trade and commerce.

Both sides agreed on the im­por­tance of fur­ther pro­mot­ing bi­lat­eral trade. The meet­ing dis­cussed trade con­ces­sions, and also cov­ered a wide range of is­sues such as Tran­sit, use of in­land wa­ter­ways, trade fa­cil­i­ta­tion, fi­nan­cial trans­ac­tions, im­mi­gra­tion, cus­toms co­op­er­a­tion, tourism, in­vest­ment, and tech­ni­cal co­op­er­a­tion be­tween the na­tional stan­dards in­sti­tu­tions. The meet­ing agreed to fast track sign­ing of the Pro­to­col on the Agree­ment on Tran­sit, Agree­ment on use of In­land wa­ter­ways, MoU on Stan­dards, and MoU on San­i­tary and Phy­tosan­i­tary. On the hy­dropower co­op­er­a­tion in­ter­est shown by the Bangladesh side, the Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion in­formed that it may be taken up at other ap­pro­pri­ate fo­rums.

The meet­ing was held in a most friendly man­ner and reaf­firmed the strong ties of friend­ship and good­will that ex­ists be­tween Bhutan and Bangladesh. It was agreed that the next meet­ing will be held in Thim­phu at a mu­tu­ally con­ve­nient time.
