Cooking gas shortage in Trongsa

Bhutan Times - - Home - Deki Lhadon/ Trongsa

Rural people in Trongsa Dzongkhag have been facing the same problem of LPG shortage even with new system put in place by Regional Trade Office.

People of Langthel gewog travel 60KM on taxi by paying huge amount of money and have to go back with their empty cylinder most of the time.

Karma farmer from Langthel said, “It is very difficult for people like me those who stay far from BOC to get the LPG even in two months”. “I keep my empty cylinder with my brother who stays at town. This is the only way I could do to get filled gas cylinder.” he said.

Local leaders during the 12th Dzngkhag Tshogdue ( DT) also raised the issue with the Regional Trade Office.

The representative from Regional Trade Office said in the DT that central region comprises of Bumthang, Trongsa and Zhemgang of which 100metric ton or 7000 gas cylinders every year are not sufficient to all the public.

As per representative, since there is no clear-cut system of issuing cylinders, officials are facing very difficult to distribute the cylinders. BOC, Trongsa issue each cylinder monthly to each LPG card holders.

Now Regional Trade office issues cards to all the Citizen ID holders for the people of Trongsa Dzongkhag and if employed they ask verification from agencies in additional to CID to issue the gas card.

For the business purpose the Regional Trade office issues different card meant for hostels and restaurants.

Local leaders suggested Regional Trade in the DT that if they could change the system of distributing gas cylinder by issuing card in house holds basis rather than issuing to every individual. The Regional Trade officials welcomed the idea and said they are ready to follow the system endorsed by DT if it benefits the public.

Drakteng Gup said though there is a system of distributing one cylinder in every month, people from remote areas faces difficulty to get even one in three months. He also suggested if Trade and BOD could keep different package for the Gewogs.

For this Regional Trade Representative said so far there is no system of keeping different package for the Gewogs. However depending on the number of population, people can write to the Ministry of Economic Affairs for the establishment of depot in the gewogs.

To solve the difficulties of the rural population, Regional Trade Office in Trongsa will write to its’ Ministry to establish depot in every Gewog.
