Though there is a policy for conservation of tiger, there is no proper policy in place to compensate the victims of tiger said local leaders of Trongsa Dzongkhag.

The issue was discussed in detailed during the 12th Dzongkhag Tshogdue. Nubi is the most affected Gewog by tiger in the dzongkhag. Total of 161 cows and 3 horses were killed within last one year.

Tiger in Nubi Gewog has not only harmed domestic animals, it has also become risk to human life.

Locally known as Lopen Umzay from Yuelling lost 3 cows recently, he was herding cow with his wife at cowshed around half km away from their village towards jungle.

“At night at around 9.30 pm we heard bawling of my cows. We were about to put on the candle but suddenly we heard the tigers roar. So we could not go out of our hut.” “The Tiger stayed around my shed till morning,” he said.

“In the morning when we go out, we found that three cows were killed” he added with sadness.

So far non tiger victim has been compensated by the Gewog adminis- tration.

“We got seed money of Nu. 300,000/- from Wild Life Conservation Division ( WCD) last year however it is not adequate to compensate the victims.” Said Tashi Pelden, Nubi Gup.

Tashi Pelden who is also a DYT chairman said, “Even if we pay Nu. 5000/- for one animal, Nubi Gewog will cost around Nu. 800,000/- which is not at all possible with the current budget” He added.

Out of five Gewogs, Nubi and Korphu gewog got Nu. 300,000/- each from WCD where as Tangsibjee and Langthel gewog got Nu. 500,000/from Zhemgang regional forest office with support from Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority. So far no such case has been reported from Drakteng Gewog.

As per few members in the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdue (DT) , tiger should not be only a concern since there are also cases of bear and leopard in the region.

To have fair and uniform compensation system in the dzongkhag, 12th DT decided to submit proposal to National Council.

The victims hereafter will be compensated based on the magnitude of the loss. For hybrid cows, victims will be paid Nu. 15,000/- and for other breeds of cows victims will be compensated of Nu. 10,000/-. In case of human life, DT proposed for indemnity of amount not less than Nu. 15000/-.
