Over 100 students from 19 different middle secondary and higher secondary schools of Thimphu and Paro Dzongkhag made a study tour to the integrated agriculture technology farm at Wangsisina under Thimphu Dzongkhag on 7th of May, 2016. The IATF in Wang Sisina under Mewang Gewog was conceptualized and given its present form by the Thimphu Dzongkhag Administration in 2014. What was initially an expanse of dry and rugged government land measuring up to 28 acres is now a mix of arable farm land and pleasant greenery dotted with features of amenity and recreational landscape. The farm also has on display a series of innovative technologies on integrated farming. These collections of varied and improved farming concepts are showcased to not only help maximize optimum production from limited resources, but also to empower farming communities in adopting practices that mitigate environmental challenges through sustainable agriculture production systems. This tour was basically on recommendation and support rendered by minister for agriculture during his invitation as chief guest to the science exhibition at Khasadrapchu MSS. An exhibition was on the theme “Science and Technology for Food Security.” The Minister of Agriculture and Forests, Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji, felt that the visit to the IAT Farm was very much relevant for the students and the teachers to practically see and experience various improved horticultural technologies and climate smart agriculture activities showcased at the farm. The opportunity for such a visit to the farm had immensely benefited the teacher and students participants as seen from the confidence in whatever exhibits they have showcased in the exhibition and as it was very much relevant to the theme. Such kinds of hands-on-experience field trip is useful for all the school students to inspire themselves by walking the talk on what they are learning in their science curriculum. The DEO of Thimphu Dzongkhag said, “The opportunity to visit the IAT farm for students and teacher participants has had a huge learning impact. Similar kinds of opportunity for other students from across the country should be encouraged with close support from the Dzongkhag Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.”
