So­cial Forestry Day cel­e­brated through­out the Coun­try

Co­in­cid­ing with the Corona­tion day of His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the day is also cel­e­brated as So­cial Forestry Day. Thou­sands of seedlings were planted through­out the coun­try. Peo­ple from all walks of life came to­gether to cel­e­brate the day by plant­ing trees as a trib­ute to His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck last Thurs­day.

In Thim­phu, plan­ta­tion was car­ried out at sev­eral places such as Kuenselpho­drang; above Sa­marz­ingkha; and Lu­drong Memo­rial Gar­den. Mem­bers of Par­lia­ment from both houses led by Speaker of the Na­tional Assem­bly, Chair­per­son from Na­tional Coun­cil, Op­po­si­tion Leader and Agri­cul­ture Min­is­ter planted around 250 oak seedlings in the re­cently burnt area at Debsi while DeSu­ups and foresters car­ried out plan­ta­tion in other ar­eas.

Speak­ing to the gath­er­ing of DeSu­ups and foresters at the Kuenselpho­drang plan­ta­tion site, the min­is­ter for agri­cul­ture and forests Ly­onpo Yeshey Dorji, ex­pressed his gratitude to His Majesty the King for the noble ini­tia­tive of the DeSu­ung pro­gram which im­mensely ben­e­fits the Min­istry be­sides oth­ers. “DeSu­ups have im­mensely helped us in fight­ing for­est fires, cordy­ceps duty and plan­ta­tion ac­tiv­i­ties. Hence, I take this op­por­tu­nity to thank each and every DeSuup not just in Thim­phu but in all the twenty dzongkhags,” added the min­is­ter.

Mean­while, in Pu­nakha and Wang­due, plan­ta­tion was car­ried out at Chimi­pang, an­other fire burnt area by 500 par­tic­i­pants con­sist­ing of foresters, DeSu­ups, CNR teach­ers and stu­dents, staff of Aman Kora, while in Bumthang plan­ta­tions was car­ried out to mark the day at Kur­jey by foresters and DeSu­ups.

Mon­gar saw plan­ta­tion of trees at a place called Chompa by sim­i­lar group of peo­ple to­gether with scout mem­bers of Mon­gar and Yak­gang HSS while also in Mon­gar, small school chil­dren of re­mote Daksa CPS in Gong­due gewog also planted saplings.

Fur­ther east, Trashigang ini­ti­ated mass plan­ta­tion at Chazam while tree species such as Teak, Champ, Fi­cus and fruit and bam­boo species were planted at Reshore in Sam­drup Jongkhar. To mark the day, 27 species of Pteri­do­phytes ( ferns) were planted in their na­ture trail for out­door learn­ing by Bumdel­ing Wildlife Sanc­tu­ary in Trashiyangtse.

In Samtse, in ad­di­tion to plan­ta­tion in sev­eral ar­eas, foresters along with Sengdhen School, and Dorokha Dungkhag of­fi­cials and Tarayana mem­bers planted about 6000 tree cy­press saplings in 12 acres in vil­lages of Jigme, Singye, Wangchuck mem­bers were also in­volved.

More than 3000 seedlings con­sist­ing of mixed broadleaved species were planted in Zhem­gang with fund sup­port pro­vided by MHPA.

Sim­i­larly, the tree plant­ing marked the cel­e­bra­tion in the other re­main­ing Dzongkhags by foresters, DeSu­ups, Schools, In­sti­tu­tions, com­mu­nity mem­bers and in­di­vid­u­als.
