WFP Bhutan: Country Brief, August 2016
T he Prime Minister of Bhutan graced the South Asia School Feeding Regional Meeting with his presence. The meeting brought together Government and WFP Officials from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka that was held in Paro, Bhutan.
An “Outcome Statement” to jointly pursue work towards improving the national school feeding programmes in all participating countries was produced by the participants to the first South Asia Regional Meeting on School Feeding. Operational Updates The Government and WFP Officials from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka met in Paro on 16-18 August 2016 for a school feeding meeting. The delegates shared challenges, lessons learnt and innovative approaches from their national school feeding programmes. At the end of the meeting, the delegates made a joint commitment to further develop and strengthen their national school feeding programmes
The delegates to the South Asia Regional Meeting on School Feeding visited two schools – Drugyel Central School and Dawakha Lower Secondary School – to witness and take part in the Bhutan National School Feeding activity. The visitors were impressed with the efficient school feeding programme in both the schools and appreciated the leadership taken by the school children in the programme.
The multi-sectoral National Nutrition Taskforce Team completed the draft nutrition strategy to accelerate actions for reducing under-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies among women and children. This action plan will be presented to the Cabinet of Ministers for their endorsement.
The Ministry of Education, together with the WFP country office is preparing for a mission by two MasterCard Volunteers who will help in conducting a Cost Benefit Analysis of the National School Feeding Programme. The results of the analysis will feed into the situational analysis for the school feeding programme in Bhutan – an analysis that will be used to discuss and situate the school feeding programme in the country and update its objectives.
