Bhutan elected as the Vice Pres­i­dent of the World Or­gan­i­sa­tion for An­i­mal Health’s

Dr Tashi Samdup, Di­rec­tor Gen­eral of the De­part­ment of Live­stock, Min­istry of Agri­cul­ture and Forests, Royal Gov­ern­ment of Bhutan, was unan­i­mously elected as the Vice Pres­i­dent of the Re­gional Commission of the OIE for Asia, the Far East and Ocea­nia by the 32 mem­ber coun­tries of the Re­gion dur­ing the 85th Ses­sion of the World An­i­mal Health As­sem­bly held from 21 to 26 May 2017 at Paris, France.

The Re­gional Commission is the re­gional body of the OIE that ad­dresses spe­cific prob­lems fac­ing its mem­bers on mat­ters re­lated to an­i­mal health, dis­ease con­trol, an­i­mal wel­fare and an­i­mal trade in the Asia-Pa­cific Re­gion. The OIE, es­tab­lished in 1924 and based in Paris, France is the world or­ga­ni­za­tion for an­i­mal health re­spon­si­ble for an­i­mal health at global level through set­ting of stan­dards for an­i­mal dis­eases, an­i­mal wel­fare, and live­stock trade. Bhutan as one of the 180 mem­ber coun­tries of the OIE has been ben­e­fit­ing im­mensely in terms of fi­nan­cial and tech­ni­cal sup­port from the OIE for an­i­mal dis­ease con­trol, ca­pac­ity build­ing, and tech­ni­cal col­lab­o­ra­tion.

As the Vice Pres­i­dent of the Re­gional Commission, it is ex­pected that Bhutan will be well rep­re­sented in in­ter­na­tional arena and can play an in­stru­men­tal role in the con­trol of trans­bound­ary an­i­mal dis­eases and emerg­ing zoonoses that could pose sig­nif­i­cant risks to the coun­tries in the Re­gion in­clud­ing Bhutan.

Dr Tashi Samdup, as the OIE Del­e­gate of Bhutan led a three mem­ber del­e­ga­tion from Bhutan for the 85th OIE Gen­eral Ses­sion. Dur­ing the gen­eral ses­sion the Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion also held side­line bi­lat­eral meet­ings with the devel­op­ment part­ners and the OIE mem­ber states for tech­ni­cal co­op­er­a­tion in ar­eas of an­i­mal dis­ease con­trol and ca­pac­ity build­ing.

Dr Tashi’s nom­i­na­tion as the Vice Pres­i­dent of the OIE Re­gional Commission fol­lows the re­cent elec­tion of Bhutan as the Chair of SAARC Chief Vet­eri­nary Of­fi­cers (CVOs) fo­rum dur­ing the 6th SAARC CVO’s Meet­ing con­vened in Thim­phu from 9 to 10 May 2017. The SAARC CVO rep­re­sents the SAARC re­gion in var­i­ous in­ter­na­tional fo­rums on live­stock and an­i­mal health or­ga­nized by FAO, OIE and other rel­e­vant or­ga­ni­za­tions. Bhutan will hold the chair of SAARC CVO un­til the con­ven­tion of the next SAARC CVO meet­ing.
