Accelerating Beekeeping for Livestock Extension Agents

Livestock Extension Agents (LEA’s) from beekeeping potential areas have successfully attended a five days Training of Trainers (ToT) on modern methods of beekeeping using moveable frame hives from 5 to 9 June 2017 at Bumthang. The training was hosted by NH-RDC Jakar in collaboration with Regional Livestock Development Centres (RLDC’s) Wangdue and Tshimasam with fund support from Government of India (GoI).

The main objectives of the training were to build the pool of beekeeping expert at the gewog level who will be able to impart the basic training to farmers in their respective areas. With this it is expected that the shortage of trained bee focal person will be mitigated up to some extent and beekeeping development is taken to greater heights.

In total 17 LEA’s had participated in the training program which comprises both theory and practical sessions. To briefly summarise, the five days training included topics such as- various bee species of Bhutan, seasonal management of honey bees and marketing aspects. It is felt that such training in the future will contribute in beekeeping development at large.
