Bhutan at the third min­is­te­rial con­fer­ence in space ap­pli­ca­tions

The third min­is­te­rial con­fer­ence on space ap­pli­ca­tions for sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment in Asia and the Pa­cific was held in Bangkok on 10th Oc­to­ber, 2018. The Bhutanese del­e­ga­tion was led by Nidup Dorji, vice chan­cel­lor of the Royal Uni­ver­sity of Bhutan and in­terim gov­ern­ment ad­vi­sor to the Min­istry of In­for­ma­tion & Com­mu­ni­ca­tions.

The min­is­te­rial con­fer­ence was con­vened with a uni­ver­sal vi­sion to en­hance re­gional co­op­er­a­tion and con­sider con­crete steps to­wards ex­pand­ing the ac­cess to, and use of space ap­pli­ca­tions for sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment.

The con­fer­ence en­dorsed the min­is­te­rial dec­la­ra­tion, re­flect­ing the pol­icy de­ci­sions of gov­ern­ments of the mem­ber coun­tries of UN- ESCAP re­gard­ing re­gional co­op­er­a­tion in space ap­pli­ca­tions for sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment.

The con­fer­ence also agreed on the Asi­aPa­cific Plan of Ac­tion on Space Ap­pli­ca­tions for sus­tain­able De­vel­op­ment (2018 – 2030) - a re­gion­ally-co­or­di­nated blue­print that har­nesses space ap­pli­ca­tions and dig­i­tal in­no­va­tions to sup­port coun­tries, par­tic­u­larly those with spe­cial needs, to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

The min­is­te­rial con­fer­ence was co-or­ga­nized by the UN-ESCAP and the Royal Thai Gov­ern­ment.
