South Asia UNICEF representatives in Bhutan for Global Hand Washing Day
United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) representatives visited Bhutan to celebrate the Global Hand Washing Day on October 22.
The chief advisor to the interim government, chief justice Tshering Wangchuk, welcomed UNICEF regional director for South Asia, Jean Gough, and UNICEF goodwill ambassador for South Asia, Sachin Tendulkar and thanked the UNICEF efforts on sanitation, peacekeeping and water efforts.
The goodwill ambassa- dor and regional director awarded the prizes to winners to the top three innovators from Bangladesh and Pakistan for the WASH innovation challenge on October 22 in Thimphu. The finale saw 12 teams from eight countries, including Bhutan.
Over 700 teams from South Asia had submitted new ideas on how best to get everyone to wash their hands with soap.
Addressing the gathering at the event, the UNICEF regional goodwill ambassador, Sachin Tendulkar encouraged the innovators to keep trying hard.
This year's Global Hand washing Day was themed “Clean Hands- a recipe for health. The WASH innovation challenge aims at identifying innovative solutions that will promote the practice of hand washing with soap. Hand washing with soap reduces the risk of illness and death among children.
