South Asia UNICEF rep­re­sen­ta­tives in Bhutan for Global Hand Wash­ing Day

United Na­tions In­ter­na­tional Chil­dren's Emer­gency Fund (UNICEF) rep­re­sen­ta­tives vis­ited Bhutan to cel­e­brate the Global Hand Wash­ing Day on Oc­to­ber 22.

The chief ad­vi­sor to the in­terim govern­ment, chief jus­tice Tsh­er­ing Wangchuk, wel­comed UNICEF re­gional di­rec­tor for South Asia, Jean Gough, and UNICEF good­will am­bas­sador for South Asia, Sachin Ten­dulkar and thanked the UNICEF ef­forts on san­i­ta­tion, peace­keep­ing and wa­ter ef­forts.

The good­will am­bassa- dor and re­gional di­rec­tor awarded the prizes to win­ners to the top three in­no­va­tors from Bangladesh and Pak­istan for the WASH in­no­va­tion chal­lenge on Oc­to­ber 22 in Thim­phu. The fi­nale saw 12 teams from eight coun­tries, in­clud­ing Bhutan.

Over 700 teams from South Asia had sub­mit­ted new ideas on how best to get ev­ery­one to wash their hands with soap.

Ad­dress­ing the gath­er­ing at the event, the UNICEF re­gional good­will am­bas­sador, Sachin Ten­dulkar en­cour­aged the in­no­va­tors to keep try­ing hard.

This year's Global Hand wash­ing Day was themed “Clean Hands- a recipe for health. The WASH in­no­va­tion chal­lenge aims at iden­ti­fy­ing in­no­va­tive so­lu­tions that will pro­mote the prac­tice of hand wash­ing with soap. Hand wash­ing with soap re­duces the risk of ill­ness and death among chil­dren.
