BHUTAN ATTENDS 138TH SESSION OF THE IPU ASSEMBLY IN GENEVA
Speaker Jigme Zangpo accompanied by Chairperson of National Council Dr (Phd) Sonam Kinga led a 10-member delegation to the 138th session of the IPU Assembly in Geneva from March 24-28, 2018. The IPU Assembly is held twice a year and the next one will also be held in Geneva in October 2018.
Speaker Jigme Zangpo addressed the Assembly during the general debate on the theme, “Strengthening the global regime for migrants and refugees: the need for evidence-based policy solutions.” The Speaker highlighted the importance of the ongoing intergovernmental negotiations to draft the two global compacts on refugees and migrants and the need for parliamentarians to support these efforts.
In sharing Bhutan’s experience, the Speaker stated that while migration has its benefits, it also has challenges especially for small countries from large-scale and unregulated migration.
Speaker Jigme Zangpo also held bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President of IPU, and with H.E. Mr. M. ThambiDurai, Deputy Speaker of India.
