PDP de­clares another seven can­di­dates

Af­ter al­most a week, the Peo­ple’s Demo­cratic Party (PDP) has again de­clared seven more can­di­dates for the up­com­ing elec­tions yes­ter­day in Thim­phu.

The new can­di­dates com­prise two Direc­tor Gen­er­als who also served as Dzongdags, a for­mer par­lia­men­tar­ian, a med­i­cal doc­tor, an ur­ban plan­ner, a ge­ol­o­gist and a forestry fire man­ager.

The two Direc­tor Gen­er­als com­prise the For­mer Direc­tor Gen­eral of Depart­ment of Lo­cal Gov­er­nance, Lungten Dorji, and For­mer Direc­tor Gen­eral of Na­tional Li­brary and Archives of Bhutan, Dorji Norbu. The for­mer will con­test from Pan­bang con­stituency in Zhem­gang, while the lat­ter will

rep­re­sent the party from Nganglam con­stituency in Pema­gat­shel.

Lungten Dorji has 27 years of ex­pe­ri­ence in the civil ser­vice and served in var­i­ous lead­er­ship po­si­tions. Start­ing as a trainee of­fi­cer with the erst­while home min­istry, he went on to serve as the Deputy Direc­tor of Depart­ment of Im­mi­gra­tion and Cen­sus and as the Head of the Of­fice of Cen­sus Com­mis­sioner. He also served as Dzongdag of Trashigang and Trongsa for 10 years be­fore be­com­ing Direc­tor Gen­eral. Lungten Dorji has master’s de­gree in Public Ad­min­is­tra­tion (Ter­ri­to­rial Ad­min­is­tra­tion) from the In­ter­na­tional In­sti­tute of Public Ad­min­is­tra­tion, France.

Mean­while, Dorji Norbu be­gan his ca­reer in the civil ser­vice in 1984. He served as the Joint Direc­tor of the erst­while Plan­ning Com­mis­sion and later as Dzongdag of Trashiyantse and Trashigang. He also served as the Direc­tor of Civil Reg­is­tra­tion and Cen­sus and Direc­tor of Depart­ment of Lo­cal Gov­er­nance. Dorji Norbu has a Post Grad­u­ate Diploma (equiv­a­lent to Master of Sci­ence) in De­mog­ra­phy and Pop­u­la­tion Stud­ies from In­ter­na­tional In­sti­tute for Pop­u­la­tion Sciences, Mum­bai, In­dia.

For­mer par­lia­men­tar­ian Sonam Pen­jore, who served dur­ing the first demo­crat­i­cally elected par­lia­ment from 2008 to 2013, was de­clared as another can­di­date from Kengkhar-Wer­ingla con­stituency in Mong­gar.

As MP, Sonam Pen­jore served as Chair­man of Public Ac­counts Com­mit­tee and mem­ber of Asian Re­gional As­so­ci­a­tion of Public Ac­count Com­mit­tee. Be­fore join­ing pol­i­tics, Sonam Pen­jore worked in var­i­ous lead­er­ship ca­pac­i­ties in Bhutan Na­tional Bank, other cor­po­rate and pri­vate of­fices.

Sonam Pen­jore has a masters’ de­gree in Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion (Fi­nance) from Edith Cowan Univer­sity, Perth, Western Aus­tralia.

A med­i­cal doc­tor, Dr. Lobzang Dorji, is another new can­di­date the party is field­ing from Jo­mot­shangkha-Martshala con­stituency in Sam­drup Jongkhar.

Dr. Lobzang Dorji started as Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer at JDWNRH and also served as District Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer in Pu­nakha and Tsir­ang and later served as Med­i­cal Su­per­in­ten­dent of Cen­tral Re­gional Referral Hos­pi­tal in Gele­phu.

He also worked as Public Health Con­sul­tant to Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion and as Coun­try Team Leader for Lo­cal Fund Agent, UNOPS and Global Fund. He also served as CEO of Pad­kar Di­ag­nos­tic Cen­tre, Thim­phu and as Tech­ni­cal Of­fi­cer of WHO in Bhutan.

Dr. Lobzang Dorji has a Masters in Public Health and a Bach­e­lors of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).

PDP also de­clared Hous­ing and In­fras­truc­ture En­gi­neer Wangdi Gyelt­shen as its can­di­date from De­wathang-Gom­dar con­stituency in Sam­drup Jongkhar.

Dur­ing his ca­reer as a hous­ing en­gi­neer, Wangdi Gyelt­shen has over­seen sev­eral na­tional projects. He also par­tic­i­pated as a can­di­date dur­ing the 2013 pri­mary round elec­tion and later served as the Gen­eral Sec­re­tary of Con­struc­tion As­so­ci­a­tion of Bhutan.

He has a Bach­e­lor in Civil Engi­neer­ing from RMIT, Mel­bourne, Aus­tralia, a Post Grad­u­ate Diploma in Hous­ing, Plan­ning and Build­ing from HIS, Rot­ter­dam, Nether­lands and Msc. in Ur­ban Hous­ing Man­age­ment from Lund/ Eras­mus Univer­sity, Rot­ter­dam/ Lund, Swe­den and Nether­lands.

Ge­ol­o­gist Dr. Tob­gay Tob­gay (PhD) is another can­di­date rep­re­sent­ing the party from Dramedt­seN­gat­shang con­stituency in Mong­gar.

Dr. Tob­gay Tob­gay served as Se­nior Ge­ol­o­gist with Depart­ment of Ge­ol­ogy and Mines for over 13 years. He also worked as As­sis­tant Re­search Pro­fes­sor for three years at the Univer­sity of Texas at El Paso, USA. He has been also been work­ing as a Con­sult­ing Ge­ol­o­gist.

He has a Doc­tor of Phi­los­o­phy in Geo­sciences from Prince­ton Univer­sity, New Jer­sey, USA. He also has Masters of Arts (Geo­sciences) from Prince­ton Univer­sity and Masters of Sci­ence in Ge­ol­ogy from the Univer­sity of Texas at El Paso, USA. He has a Bach­e­lor of Sci­ence (Ge­ol­ogy) from Univer­sity Wol­lon­gong, Aus­tralia.

The For­mer Head of For­est Fire Man­age­ment Divi­sion, Depart­ment of For­est and Park Ser­vices, Tandin Dorji, is the sev­enth can­di­date who was an­nounced by PDP as its can­di­date from South Thim­phu in Thim­phu.

Tandin Dorji has worked as Pro­ject Man­ager of Small Grant Pro­ject, NAPA, UNDP. He also worked as Fo­cal Per­son for Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment and Su­per­vi­sor for Tashich­hod­zong beau­ti­fi­ca­tion and land­scap­ing pro­ject. He was also the Pres­i­dent of Aus­tralian Bhutan As­so­ci­a­tion of Canberra. He was also the Co­or­di­na­tor of Friends of Po­lice (RBP).

Tandin Dorji has a Masters of En­vi­ron­ment from Aus­tralian Na­tional Univer­sity, Aus­tralia.
