Botswana

Fees are payable in pula – you can ex­change rand for pula at most bor­der posts, usu­ally in­for­mally. Ve­hi­cle fee: P190 (R240). If you’re plan­ning to exit and re- en­ter Botswana dur­ing the same holiday (usu­ally the case if you add Caprivi to your itin­er­ary) it’s bet­ter to pay for a mul­ti­ple en­try pass.

Namibia

You can pay in rand (cash). Ve­hi­cle fee: R242; trailer: R154.

Zambia

Some fees are payable in (US$) only and oth­ers in kwacha (K). You can ex­change dol­lars for kwacha in­for­mally at most bor­ders – check the ex­change rate be­fore­hand. Car­bon tax: K150 (R204, for a ve­hi­cle with a 3-litre en­gine). In­sur­ance: K305 (R415). Coun­cil levy: K30 (R41). Toll: US$20 (R277).

Zim­babwe

En­ter­ing Zim is ex­pen­sive, and fees are paid in US$. Car­bon tax: US$15 (R208). In­sur­ance: US$30 (R416). Road tax: US$10 (R139).
