The cost of collusion
The December impeachment of President Park Geun-hye is having repercussions across politics and business. Park is accused of coercing major South Korean corporations to donate millions of dollars to foundations run by Choi Soon-sil, daughter of a shamanistic cult founder. Special investigators are digging into Choi’s many connections. In mid-january, Samsung vice-chairman Jay Y Lee narrowly avoided arrest on bribery charges connected with the scandal. Opposition parties want to break the close links between the chaebols (large family-run conglomerates) and government.
