Red cards for team Bongo

The Africa Report - - POLITICS -

WITH THE CONTINENT’S EYES on Gabon, President Ali Bongo Ondimba is using the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament as an excuse to do a little housekeeping. Ahead of the first whistle on 15 January, Bongo’s administration jailed Etienne Ngoubou, who had just been sacked as oil minister, and Magloire Ngambia, one of Bongo’s former close allies, on corruption charges. August’s disputed presidential election drew cries of vote-rigging from all corners, and Bongo is keen to show he is actively fighting graft after doing very little about it in his first term in office.
