Islamic Art and Local Artists on Display at the Islamic Calligraphy and Art Study Center, YSHHB

Varieties of stunning Islamic calligraphy and art can now be seen at the gallery from the Islamic Calligraphy and Art Study Center, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB), which was opened to the public on 5 March 2020 at an event officiated by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, who is also the Chairman of the Committee of Governors of YSHHB.

The center itself was first established in July 2013, the first of its kind in the Sultanate, with the aim to train Muslim youths to become pioneers in Islamic arts by offering courses, workshops and seminars.

Today, the newly refurbished Islamic Calligraphy and Art Study Center, YSHHB, is a handsome establishment housing three galleries highlighting different aspects of Islamic art. This includes the Lauhah Al-islamic Gallery, which exhibits international art and artifacts focusing on the collection of khat and illumination artwork; the Alaswad Gallery which displays arts, artifacts and writing instruments related to the development of Jawi writing skills with the use of hologram technology, and focuses on seven forms of calligraphy widely used throughout Islamic civilisation; and the At-tasmeem Gallery, which showcases the collection of interior design art made through collaborations with local entrepreneurs.

Their facilities are equally impressive. The Semaun Souvenir Shop which offers a diverse range of beautifully made Islamicthemed products and souvenirs, including intricate glass work from Mahkota Crystal, while the Semaun Café will offer local delicacies for visitors to enjoy. There are also Lecture Rooms and Halls designed for lectures, workshops, meetings and events.

The Islamic Calligraphy and Art Center is open from 9am5pm daily (closed from 12pm2pm on Fridays) and will also be offering plenty of workshops and activities in 2020.
