Bamboo Rafting

-

With its buoyant properties, bamboo has traditionally provided the Bidayuh people with the means to navigate waterways of their heartland. Bamboo rafts have the advantage of being quickly and easily assembled by lashing together bamboo tubes.

While not as commonly used, these basic but functional rafts still offer the opportunity to explore the narrow Sirin River.

Constructed from 10 bamboo tubes, these rafts float well but offer little protection from the water – getting wet is all part of the rafting experience. As the day grows warmer, the cooling splashes are a welcome respite from the heat.

The river meanders through rainforest, bamboo groves, farmland, and passes a number of Bidayuh villages. Guests may help to guide the raft along the river, steering past a series of small rapids.

At midday, a rest stop on a pebble “beach” also allows guests the opportunity to experience Bidayuh dishes the traditional way, which are prepared on-site by guides. There is also the chance to join them to forage for edible jungle produce.

After lunch, the rafts continue downriver, reaching a number of deeper pools – perfect for a quick dip to freshen up.

Guests arrive at a village homestay around 3-4pm, depending on water levels. After a round of refreshments, they can then take the shuttle back to Kuching – or opt to spend another day or two at the village homestay. •• Email: info@ borneoadventure.com FB: @borneoadventures W: borneoadventure.com
