Freediving
Free yourself of your scuba gear and immerse yourself in a silent world of strange Zen-like sensations
Descending to the deep on one breath of air, immersing yourself in the silence of the seas… With no bubbles and no bulky equipment, freediving is aptly named.
Learning to both use and overcome the body’s natural reflexes, this type of diving is not only a physical challenge but also a mental one.
Freediving is a diverse sport made up of a number of disciplines:
1 STATIC APNEA
The diver holds their breath with their nose and mouth underwater, not moving, for the longest amount of time possible. This can be undertaken either on the surface or with the diver totally submerged, though the maximum depth allowed is three metres underwater.
2 DYNAMIC APNEA
In these distance disciplines, the diver swims underwater as far as possible horizontally, either with fins
(or a monofin) or without fins.
3 CONSTANT WEIGHT
Divers test the limits of the depth they can achieve, either with fins or without, following a descent line. The dive is disqualified if the divers touch the rope or use it to pull themselves up or down.
4 FREE IMMERSION
Divers pull themselves down and back up along a descent line, striving to reach the deepest depth they can.
5 VARIABLE WEIGHT
Divers use a ballast of up to 30kg to pull them to their deepest depth they can reach, at which point they release it and ascend using fins or a monofin.
6 NO LIMITS
In this extreme depth orientated discipline, which is a variation on Variable Weight, divers descend as deeply as possible with the help of a sled weighted with ballast. The ascent is usually facilitated with the help of an inflatable balloon-like device.
FREEDIVER
Teaches you to freedive to a maximum depth of 20m over two to two-and-a-half days. The course also teaches you static apnea to help develop your breathholding abilities and in-water comfort. It includes classroom, confined and open water sessions.
TWO STAR: OPEN WATER FREEDIVER
Made up of theory, classroom and pool sessions, and three open water dives, the course builds on theory learnt in the AIDA One Star Discover Freediving programme. To successfully complete the AIDA 2 Star Freediver course you will have to perform a two-minute breathhold, swim 40 metres underwater with fins, and dive to 16 metres in open water.
FREEDIVER
Includes confined water sessions to learn breath-hold techniques as well as static and dynamic apnea, with a goal of mastering static apnea of 90 seconds and dynamic apnea of 25 metres. Open water sessions let you practise free immersion and constant weight freedives, plus proper buddy procedures, with dives of 10 metres depth.
FREEDIVING LEVEL 1
Through theory, confined, and two open water sessions with dives to a minimum of 10 metres, the course helps you acquire the proper skills and knowledge to freedive to depths of 20 metres in the most relaxed and safest manner possible.
FIRST LEVEL
The objective of the course is to reach controlled freediving by applying relaxation and breathing techniques in order to achieve 1.15 minutes of static apnea, 25 metres in dynamic and 8 metres in depth.
LEVEL 1 FREEDIVER
The fundamentals of the FII education system in a course that spans classroom, pool and open water. With a high emphasis on safety and comfort, students master the proper skills to effectively dive up to depths of 20 metres.
