The num­ber of sus­pected drug deal­ers gunned down by In­done­sian se­cu­rity forces so far this year – more than three times the num­ber killed in 2016, ac­cord­ing to Amnesty In­ter­na­tional. The or­gan­i­sa­tion has ac­cused the In­done­sian gov­ern­ment of im­port­ing Philip­pine Pres­i­dent Ro­drigo Duterte’s vi­o­lent war on drugs to the ar­chi­pel­ago, cit­ing na­tional po­lice chief Tito Kar­na­vian’s praise for his meth­ods. In­done­sian Pres­i­dent Joko Wi­dodo has or­dered se­cu­rity forces to shoot for­eign sus­pects who re­sist ar­rest. In­done­sia al­ready has some of the world’s harsh­est penal­ties for those con­victed of smug­gling il­le­gal drugs.
