Sin­ga­pore’s new pres­i­dent

Hal­imah Ya­cob was in­au­gu­rated as Sin­ga­pore’s first fe­male pres­i­dent last month af­ter her two op­po­nents were de­clared in­el­i­gi­ble to hold the of­fice. The ‘re­served elec­tion’ fol­lowed through on Prime Min­is­ter Lee Hsien Loong’s pledge to en­sure a head of state from the city-state’s eth­nic Malay mi­nor­ity.
