ECO­NOMIC OUT­LOOK OF SEA VUL­NER­A­BLE TO DEBT

Ris­ing pri­vate and cor­po­rate debt, trade pro­tec­tion­ism and short­com­ings in rev­enue are grow­ing chal­lenges to the re­gion’s econ­omy, ac­cord­ing to a se­nior UN of­fi­cial, who pointed to debt in Malaysia and Thai­land as ar­eas to rem­edy in order to avoid a re­peat of the 1997 Asian fi­nan­cial cri­sis. Shamshad Akhtar, ex­ec­u­tive sec­re­tary of the UN’s Eco­nomic and So­cial Com­mis­sion for Asia and the Pa­cific, also noted that re­gional trade war threats un­der­mined eco­nomic growth.
