Two may­ors and a vice mayor fell to gun­men's bul­lets in less than a week in July in the Philip­pines, lead­ing to in­ter­na­tional spec­u­la­tion about the na­tion's cul­ture of vi­o­lence and the vig­i­lan­tism of Pres­i­dent Ro­drigo Duterte's drug war. The of­fi­cial death toll is 4,200 but rights groups es­ti­mate the toll to be triple that fig­ure. At least ten may­ors have been killed since Duterte has been in of­fice.
