CENTRAL NEWFOUNDLAND – This year’s smile cookie campaign at the Grand FallsWindsor, Bishop’s Falls and Lewisporte Tim Hortons locations raised more than $15,000 to support the South and Central Health Foundation (SCHF)

The SCHF is a registered charity dedicated to enhancing health care programs and services offered by Central Health.

Funds from the campaign will be used to furnish an area to support patients and their families when the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre (CNRHC) is over capacity.

Equipment and comfort items such as night stands, overbed tables, wheelchairs, walkers, foot stools, patient bedside chairs and visitor chairs will be purchased to accommodate up to six patients.

“The provincial government can only do so much, so without these partnerships, there’s all these really important things that impact people right here,” said SCHF chair Ben Blackmore. “It’s people that could be family members or friends that will actually get to use these things, but without your help we couldn’t do it. It’s awesome and we really appreciate it.”

According to Gaitane Villeneuve, director of communications for Central Health,

“the goal of acute care bed management at Central Health facilities is to maximize our efforts to ensure that patients receive the right care, by the right provider, in the right setting.

“On occasion, that may mean receiving care at another facility in the region or moving to another unit within the same facility,” Villeneuve stated in an e-mail to the Advertiser. “Despite our best efforts, there are occasions when providing the necessary care to everyone results in overcapacity at our facilities.”

Every year during the smile campaign, Tim Hortons chooses a charity that will directly impact central Newfoundland.

“We’ve used the hospital foundation a couple of times, we’re happy to get a chance to use them again this time and I’m sure we’ll do it again in the future,” said Duane Sutherland, owner of the participating Tim Hortons locations.

Villeneuve said Central Health is grateful for the help.

“We are so thankful for the support from our health foundations, and community partners like Tim Hortons. These gifts help Central Health provide a better patient experience.”

On Nov. 3 representatives from Tim Hortons presented a cheque for $15,163 to the SCHF.
