Hockey team name, logo, earn some growls

Advertiser (Grand Falls) - - Editorial -

The name, Newfoundland Growlers and the logo, a bewildered looking Newfoundland dog, announced for the ECHL team in St. John’s display ignorance and insensitivity. The team owners and management are obviously unaware that Newfoundland dogs are known for their pleasant disposition. They are not growlers.

As St. John’s is the capital city of the province of “Newfoundland and Labrador” the team name should include the full name of the province or St. John’s only. The “Newfoundland and Labrador Canines” with realistic images of a black Newfoundland dog and a black Labrador retriever would be much more appropriate.

The announced name shows great insensitivity to the fact that Labrador constitutes about 70 per cent of the area of this province. As far as growlers also being chunks of sea ice, something more dynamic would be much better for a sports team.

Let’s go canines!
