One Canadian team was golden at the Glacier on Sunday. The other was gutted. Canada’s under-18 team, with a roster that included four Newfoundlanders, successfully defended its world crown with a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic in the division final of the 2018 International Ball and Street Hockey Federation’s junior championships in Mount Pearl. But Canada had to settle for a second straight world silver in the U20 division as a result of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Czech Republic on Sunday night. The

In the U18 deciding game, Jack Keough of St. John’s and Brent Broaders of Gander — Canada’s leading scorer in the tournament — each had assists for the winning side.

Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts and Adam Mouland of Gander are also part of the Canadian team, which was perfect in the tournament, going 5-0 in the preliminary round for a first-place finish that sent it straight to Sunday’s final.

In the U20 championship game, the Czechs got a powerplay goal from Marek Stefka 10 minutes into the extra frame for the win.

The result was a reversal of the Canadian-Czech preliminary-round contest, which saw the Canadians prevail in OT.

Jordan Maher of Gander, one of five Newfoundlanders on Canada’s U20 roster, had a goal and an assist in Sunday’s gold-medal game. Joel Bishop of St. John’s and Jesse Sutton of Mount Pearl had an assist on Maher’s tally.

James O’Brien of Mount Pearl and Kyle McGrath were also part of the host under-20 entry, with Mike Dyke of Gander an assistant on the coaching staff.

Canada had gone 3-1-0 in round-robin play, losing only to the Slovakia. But the hosts rallied for a 9-2 shellacking of the Slovaks in a Saturday semifinal.

Canada had lost to Slovakia in the U20 final at the 2016 world juniors in Sheffield, England. The world junior championships are held every two years.
