Rachelle Sigurdson has lived on her property in Dauphin, Manitoba for much of her life and in fact, grew up in the house next door! Her grandfather owned the property and as a wedding gift, he gave his children pieces of the property to build their homes on.

Rachelle is a stay at home mom, with three sons who are now all adults and is enjoying her first grandchild, a beautiful little girl! With a husband who works long hours as a dentist, Rachelle took up gardening about 20 years ago to keep herself busy. Needing to keep a watchful eye on a young family, she started around the pool area, and as the boys grew older she stretched out into the garden. Rachelle has focused much of her attention on the backyard, as her dogs are constantly at her side and love to roam free while she works.

There were originally three large elm trees in the backyard, so hostas were an easy choice to grow in the shade. Because of being a short season gardener, and having a large garden, Rachelle didn’t want to divide the hostas, as she loves large statement plants, so she allows them to spread out every year. To get an idea of the magnitude of her garden, Rachelle has also planted twenty thunderchild crabapples that border the backyard. As her sons grew older, they also took up gardening and took over all of the hard scape. The pathways, brick work, pond and tree house were all thanks to the hard work of her three boys, although Rachelle continues to be in charge of the plants. The detail that you will see in the yard is incredible, from a mannequin she refers to as “My Girl” to wrought iron and stained glass that is all locally designed and created. There are also pots and planters that surround the pool and are also strategically placed throughout other parts of the garden, filled with annuals that are all perfectly coordinated with the colour of her home.

A colourful welcome from the Sigurdson's garden in Dauphin, Mb.
