Annapolis RCMP deal with arsons, missing people, and accidents
Annapolis District RCMP were kept hopping last week – mostly with car crashes on snowy, icy roads. But they also dealt with other matters, including a couple of suspected arsons, a student loan scam, and people reported missing.
And then there was that house where two people showed up with a gun.
In total they responded to 112 calls for service from Jan. 30 to Feb. 6.
There were numerous 911-related calls, an assault, one breach of recognizance, one break-andenter, one careless use of a firearm, eight checkstops, one Child Welfare Act incident, four criminal harassment calls, one failing to remain at an accident, and three false alarms.
There were also other calls -a fraud, four Mental Health Act calls, three mischief calls, one motor vehicle insurance coverage violation, nine motor vehicle speeding violations, one Off-road Vehicle Act incident, two offender management actions, 16 motor vehicle traffic violations, four other non-moving traffic calls, and one other theft under $5,000.
There was possession of marijuana case, one possession of methamphetamine, two suspicious persons, one theft of a motor vehicle, 10 traffic collisions, one trafficking in marijuana, and three uttering threats.
Following are a few of the calls for service:

-- Jan. 30 at 11:35 a.m. at Bridgetown. A person was reported missing. The youth had been missing for four days at that point. The missing person was located by police and determined to be fine.
-- Jan. 31 at 12:19 p.m. at Bridgetown. Police conducted a check on an offender who is on conditions of probation and subject to a curfew. The offender was found to be at home and in compliance with his conditions.
-- Jan. 31 at 2:38 p.m. at Middleton. Police received a report of a theft of a snowmobile. Taken was a 2001 red and black Arctic Cat. It was reported missing from a camp in Port George. Also taken in the break-in was a power saw. The file is still under investigation.
-- Jan. 31 at 3:21 p.m. at Margaretsville. A resident reported receiving a call from her former university concerning her student loan and requesting personal information such as SIN and date of birth. Police referred her to Service Canada to advise that her SIN had been fraudulently obtained, and she was advised to call her bank, and Equifax.
-- Feb. 1 at 2:53 p.m. at Wilmot. Police received a report of a missing person who had not returned home at their scheduled time. The person’s phone was not working and the complainant was very concerned. They later contacted police to advise that they had made contact with the person via Facebook. The missing person advised that they were fine – just having some car trouble.
-- Feb. 1 at 3:49 p.m. at Brickton. Police discovered a vehicle off the road in the ditch due to rapidly deteriorating road conditions. The vehicle lost control while travelling west on Highway 1. The vehicle sustained minor damage but required a tow. The driver was uninjured.
-- Feb. 1 at 4:17 p.m. at Annapolis County. Police received a complaint of threats between two students. This incident has been referred to the community program officer and the school safety resource officer.
-- Feb. 1 at 4:40 p.m. at Middleton. Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 at Exit 18A. The roads were extremely icy. The single occupant was not injured but there was significant damage to the vehicle. The vehicle required a tow.
-- Feb. 1 at 5:06 p.m. at Brickton. Police received a report of a twovehicle crash. There was heavy snow and poor visibility at the time. One vehicle was rear-ended by the other. There was damage to both vehicles and both required a tow. EHS was requested. Statements were taken from all parties.
-- Feb. 1 at 9:54 p.m. one Highway 101 at Lawrencetown. Police received a 911 call about a singlevehicle crash. A woman reported that she had been talking on the phone with her boyfriend when she heard a scream and he told her to call 911. Police arrived to find that first responders were already there. EHS also responded and cleared the driver who was not injured.
-- Feb. 2 at 11:18 a.m. at Wilmot. Police received a 911 call about a two-vehicle crash in the parking lot of a business in Wilmot, There were no injuries and minor damage to both vehicles. Police went to the scene and determined that the damage was under $2,000 per vehicle. Police facilitated the exchange of information.
-- Feb. 3 at 1:29 a.m. in Nictaux. Police were called to a suspicious fire in Nictaux. Police utilized the services of the fire marshal’s office and the fire is still under investigation.
-- Feb. 3 at 8:09 a.m. at Upper Granville. Police received a report of a single-vehicle crash. A west-bound vehicle hit a patch of ice and lost control. They left the road and hit a signpost. There was extensive damage to the vehicle. The driver was taken to hospital for minor injuries. The car was removed at a later date because it was considered too dangerous to remove it at that time.
-- Feb. 3 at 3:23 p.m. at South Farmington. Police received a complaint of theft where someone gained access to a person’s computer via Facebook and took money from the person’s account. The person was advised to report to her bank and the investigation is ongoing.
-- Feb. 4 at 12:17 a.m. at Nictaux. Police stopped a vehicle after it failed to stop at a stop sign on Highway 10 and Highway 201 in Nictaux. Police were able to smell liquor coming from the vehicle and on the driver’s breath. The driver complied with a roadside screening test. A warning registered on the machine and the person was issued a sevenday suspension.
-- Feb. 4 at 3:05 p.m. at Granville Ferry. Police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Highway 1 and were able to detect a strong smell of marijuana coming for the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle were arrested and a small quantity of marijuana was seized. Police will be seeking as destruction order for the marijuana from Health Canada.
-- Feb. 4 at 6:50 p.m. at Forest Glade. Police responded to a single-vehicle crash. The vehicle lost control on icy roads and went into the ditch hitting a tree. The vehicle sustained extensive damage. The driver had minor injuries but did not want to go to the hospital. The vehicle had to be towed.
-- Feb. 4 at 9:06 p.m. at Middleton. Police were called to a report of a disturbance. The complainant reported being at a business in Middleton with friends when they were approached by five males who threatened them. The complainant drove away while the five males ran after him. One kicked his car causing damage to a door. A patrol was made but police were unable to find the five males. The incident is still under investigation.
-- Feb. 5 at 11:11 a.m. at Middleton. Police received a complaint of a fire in a dumpster on Main Street. Police and fire attended. There are no suspects at this time.
-- Feb. 5 at 9:48 p.m. at Waldec. Police received a complaint of a person pointing a firearm and threats uttered. The call came in via 911. Two males had gone to the caller’s house, one with a firearm. Police went to the home and were provided with a description. The suspects were located and arrested. Statements were obtained. Both were held in custody and the suspect vehicle was seized. The incident is still under investigation and charges are pending.
