Celebrating spring and St. Patrick’s Day

Annapolis Valley Register - - SPORTS X - Karen Sotvedt Throwing rocks

The days are getting longer, the snow is disappearing and St. Patrick’s Day is soon upon us, so Middleton Curling Club celebrated with the annual Spring is Here spiel.

This one-day funspiel was open to all and included new and experienced curlers, friends from out of town, and folks from other clubs who like a day of social curling.

It was a full house and the outfits – as always – ran from the wearing o’ the green in some bizarre ways, to Hawaiian hula skirts, flowered leis, and in the case of club president Ian Reesor, shorts, tank-top, and sunhat.

There were four draws of six-end games, with a lunch in between for all curlers plus door prizes. At the end of the day, when points were tallied, new skip Mike Mckinnnon was the overall winner with his team of Graham Bell, Berwick’s Dave Macneil, and new curler Jodi Goudey. They got the trophy, bragging rights, and first pick at the prize table.

As in all MCC funspiels, there are prizes for everyone. An additional prize was given for best costume that went to Bruce Johnson, who arrived in full Irish gear including his pot of gold. Everyone gave a round of applause and a rousing cheer for Dave and Nancy Acker who host this great day every year.

With only a few short weeks of curling left, members are getting as much activity as possible with the remaining time. Chase the Ace continues on Friday nights, with the pot next week being over $1,400. Draw is at 8 p.m. with doors open at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, March 18 is the next Big breakfast, always a hit with the community and the full menu includes bacon, which according to comments from satisfied customers, is becoming a rarity on the breakfast circuit. The club is open from 8 to 10:30 a.m. for this event.

Two more funspiels are coming up and open to all if you want to get in a little extra curling before the ice is taken out. Bill Eaton runs his end-of-season bonspiel on two evening in the last week of March. And this year on April 1 the club will host a “Curl for Kids” funspiel in support of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. All are welcome to participate and signup sheets are in the club, or you can get information through the contact page at www.middletoncurlingclub.com
