Young curlers do club proud at NSSAF regionals

Annapolis Valley Register - - SPORTS - Karen Sotvedt

There was lots of activity for members of Middleton Curling Club last week, both social and competitive.

League play continued as normal for the first time in a while – no snow days, no holidays, no stormy nights.

Jadyn Phinney, from the club’s junior program, skipped a team with Brooke Thomas, Katelyn Tattersall, and Mary Elliott in the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation regionals, which took place in Kentville.

They played and won three games in one day going into the tournament, and won the consolation division the following day.

In addition to the junior program, Jadyn also curls in the Western Draw league and is becoming quite at ease in competition. And for two of her teammates in the NSSAF, this is their first year curling.

Social Events

The calendar held a number of social events at the club in addition to curling. The winner of Friday night’s pot at Chase the Ace was longtime member Gloria Field – and as it was her birthday it was a very fitting way for her to celebrate. However, she did not draw the ace, so then there was additional cause to cheer – the draw will go on for at least another week, with the pot over $2,200.

And speaking of birthdays, friends and family of George Barker gathered at the club on Sunday to mark his 97th birthday with a day of socializing, curling, eating – in fact, there is nothing much you can add to these three essentials for a good get-together.

This was the third year in a row that George’s party has been in the club and included both current and past club members as families move around but come back to acknowledge his big day.

Big Breakfast

The Big Breakfast on Saturday was successful as always and means there is only one more in the club calendar before the curling season ends, so make sure you keep the morning of March 24 free for this popular event.

The annual Spring is Here funspiel is next week on March 10. There are still a few spaces available for this one day of curling – individual entries, two six-end games, lunch and prizes for everyone.

Club funspiels do not require the entrants be a member or even a curler. Many times the first time someone has curled in a team has been one of these events.
