Ax­e­women get back on win­ning track with 66-0 win over Huskies

The Ax­e­women rugby team im­prove to 3-1 with their sec­ond win against the Saint Mary’s Huskies this sea­son.

Fifth-year wing Mad­die MacKen­zie posted four tries, three of which came in the clos­ing min­utes of the sec­ond half.

For­mer UPEI Pan­ther Alysha Cor­ri­gan scored in the open­ing minute of the game on a long 20plus me­tre run across the goal line for the first of 12 Ax­e­women tries.

Not un­til nearly 27 min­utes later did the Ax­e­women post an­other try. Sarah Boudreau started a wave of tries that fol­lowed.

Within the last 12 min­utes of the open­ing half, three ad­di­tional tries to Boudreau’s were scored by MacKen­zie, and sec­ond year Ax­e­women Laura Pflei­derer and Em­i­lie Mer­i­lainen.

The Huskies trailed Aca­dia 27-0 at the half.

First-year prop Va­lerie Wideski scored her first try of the sea­son, which was con­verted by Pflei­derer in the open­ing two min­utes of the sec­ond half.

Madi­son Firth and Sarah Roblin added two tries (not con­verted) to give the Ax­e­women a com­mand­ing 44-0 lead with 30 min­utes re­main­ing in the game.

MacKen­zie’s last three tries came in the last 17 min­utes of the match. Keisha Kane split the sec­ond last and last MacKen­zie tries to give the host Ax­e­women a 66-0 win over the win­less Huskies.
