Erica Hawkes grew up in the countryside of Prince George, BC, surrounded by space and nature. Summer mornings were heralded by incessant birdsong; moose and bear the nearest neighbours. Evenings were enchanting under a blanket of stars, and northern lights in winter. Erica lived in a small but cozy house with her mother, father, an older brother and two sisters (one her identical twin). Growing up in a religious home, she learned respect for herself and others. Free time was spent taking long walks through the forest, collecting agates, and going to the library. Reading is a pastime that she and her children continue today. "We are currently into ‘The Secret Garden’. They love it." Both her parents were very creative. Erica’s dad was a jeweler and her mom came from a long line of quilters. Erica loved art from the first colouring contest she won in first grade. She recalls, "I grew up with a lot of values. One of which was: Do everything to the best of your ability. Thankfully, ability gets better over time. I also learned to treat others with kindness and respect, and that we are all equal and have value, regardless of where we live and grow up. Everyone has a unique gift to give the world. They just have to find it."
Erica’s art is inspired by skies filled with everchanging clouds, and sunsets over the water. She
